Rat tickling: A systematic review of applications, outcomes, and moderators

INTRODUCTION Rats initially fear humans which can increase stress and impact study results. Additionally, studying positive affective states in rats has proved challenging. Rat tickling is a promising habituation technique that can also be used to model and measure positive affect. However, current studies use a variety of methods to achieve differential results. Our objective was to systematic...

It is not always tickling: Distinct cerebral responses during perception of different laughter types

Laughter is highly relevant for social interaction in human beings and non-human primates. In humans as well as in non-human primates laughter can be induced by tickling. Human laughter, however, has further diversified and encompasses emotional laughter types with various communicative functions, e.g. joyful and taunting laughter. Peripheral mechanisms of pleasurable touch

were first studied by Zotterman in cats and suggested that knismesis is carried in part by pain fibers (21). C-fibers, unmyelinated afferents, are putatively involved in pleasurable touch in rodents (22). Central mechanisms of tickling were investigated by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in human brains (9); that study, which used tickling stimuli evoking knismesis and observedsoma...

Neurogenesis in the dentate gyrus of the rat hippocampus enhanced by tickling stimulation with positive emotion.

Hippocampal neurogenesis is influenced by many factors. In this study, we examined the effect of tactile stimulation (tickling), which induced positive emotion, on neurogenesis in the dentate gyrus (DG) of the hippocampus. Four week-old rats were tickled for 5 min/day on 5 consecutive days and received 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine (BrdU) administration for 4 days from the second tickling day. Then t...

DeGowin's Diagnostic Examination, 7th Edition

instruments, huge statistical samples, and years of training, Provine's investigation seems almost naively simplistic. Much of his data come from simple surveys conducted of his students (how many times have you been tickled in the last month?), qualitative observations of people's chuckles, and recordings taken in shopping malls of people laughing. His discovery that contralateral self-ticklin...
